My favorite colour is brown.
And yes, I am used to the big eyes and surprised looks I get from people, especially children, when they hear that brown is my favorite colour of all. When that happens, I say: "Why are you surprised? Brown is the lovely colour of earth, of tree trunks and of delicious chocolate." And then, when appropriate, I add: "Brown is also the beautiful colour of your hair and eyes." That is when understanding a recognition appear in their eyes. Brown is indeed a beautiful, even if a somewhat undervalued and forgotten, colour.
Most people like blue, yellow, red, purple. Pink is especially a favorite with little girls. Brown often has negative connotations: poo and mud are both brown.
Red used to be my favorite colour. But then it changed to brown.
It happened after I adopted my beautiful brown little girl, MG, and realized that brown was never the favorite colour of anybody we knew. That is when it became my preferred colour.
So I started paying attention to the colour: I add brown items to my wardrobe when I can -luckily it looks great on me (you should try it too) - and I use varied tones of brown in my paintings.
When MG asks me what my favorite colour is, "brown" is the word that naturally slips off the tip of my tongue- even while pink used to be her favorite.
So there. I have been rooting for brown ever since. And I suggest you too reconsider the beauty of brown. For it is indeed everywhere, this earthy and chocolaty tone that we see all around us but don't always appreciate. And from January 2009, I can also happily add this sentence to my list of brown items: "Brown is also the colour of the President of the United States."
A real coup for my brown crusade.

I love chocolate brown and wear it often! It is probably my favorite color to wear. I have been getting back to wearing black after a long break--black is a great color to travel with--makes packing very easy! Love the blog!!
